Rule of thumb: dining tables look best with an 8-12 inch drop on each side. Buffet and banquet tables usually go floor-length (measure table height and use half of it as the drop).

How to measure a table for a tablecloth

  1. Measure the tabletop. For rectangle tables, measure the length and the width across the top surface. For round tables, measure the diameter straight across the center.
  2. Decide the drop. The drop is how far the fabric hangs over the edge on each side. Standard dining drop is 8-12 inches. Formal settings can go to 15 inches. Floor-length banquet cloths use roughly half the table height.
  3. Do the math. Add twice the drop to each measurement. A 60 x 36 inch table with a 10-inch drop needs an 80 x 56 inch tablecloth. A 48-inch round table with a 10-inch drop needs a 68-inch round tablecloth.

Frequently asked questions

What size tablecloth do I need for an 8-foot table?

An 8-foot (96 x 30 inch) banquet table needs a 120 x 60 inch tablecloth for a standard 12-inch drop, or a 120 x 82 inch cloth for a fuller 26-inch drop toward floor length.

What size tablecloth fits a 60-inch round table?

A 60-inch round table takes a 76 to 90-inch round tablecloth, depending on drop. 90-inch round is the most popular choice for banquet seating because it gives a comfortable 15-inch drop.

Should a tablecloth touch the floor?

Only for formal events and buffets. For everyday dining, an 8-12 inch drop is standard – long enough to look elegant, short enough that guests do not sit on the fabric.
